I am Velayudhan, a 'coolie', that is unskilled laborer. I live in a remote village of Kerala. My working hours, like my other colleagues, are 9.30 AM to 4 PM. In between I get a break of half an hour for tea and 1 hour for lunch. I get a small wage of Rs.700/- per day (i.e. six hours work) depending on the place of work and demand for labor during the period.I am also entitled to have good breakfast and sumptuous non-vegetarian meal at my work place at the cost of my employer. I have a ration card declaring my family as poor ( BPL Card) by the government and get rice @ Rs.2/- per Kg and other items at a subsidized price. In the evening I buy a bottle of Whiskey, ( or Rum or Brandy) and enjoy with beef fry, chilly chicken or Shwarma along with my friends. I sell the empty bottle to 'Kabadi' for which I get two rupees, enough for a Kg of rice for my family. I do not work on Saturdays, Sundays and other holidays. Also, whenever I feel like taking rest, I declare a holiday for me. My wife is 'Kutumbasree' member ; so gets benefits from our government to supplement the family. Kerala is full of poor people like me.
